Course Overview

The overall objective of this certificate program is to provide pharmacists, registered nurses and nurse practitioners with the knowledge and skills to effectively and safely manage oral anticoagulation therapy under a medical directive.

Course Details

This certificate program consists of two components: an online, self-paced learning module, and an experiential mini-clinical rotation comprised of three visits to the anticoagulation clinic at the Centre for Family Medicine Family Health Team.

Online Module

The online component of this course consists of readings and several case studies designed to prepare participants for their clinical site visits. The University of Waterloo grants students access to the online portion of the course one month before their first site visit.

Note - High speed access is a requirement for this module. Before registering, you should check your system to make sure it meets the minimum requirements for working in Waterloo's online learning environment.

Three Site Visits

Under the supervision of clinical pharmacist Dr. Jeff Nagge, PharmD, participants in this program will develop the competence to make confident warfarin dosing decisions, and create appropriate anticoagulation-related care plans for their patients.

Evaluation of participants

Participants will be evaluated in three manners:

  1. Their responses to the case studies assigned in the online module
  2. Their performance on a test to be completed after finishing the online module
  3. Their performance at each of the three clinic experiences

Refund Policy

Due to high demand, and the limited availability of clinical dates, we do not provide refunds for this course. Please ensure in advance that you are available for all the dates you register for.
